Solomon had the favor of God. Therefore, God asked him what his request would be. Solomon replied that he wanted discernment and from that day on he became very wise. Through his life, Solomon could discern right from wrong. He knew his people and how to judge them effectively. He was very brilliant and understood how to rule well.
A fascinating example of this is when two mothers came to him each claiming that a newborn was hers and not the other woman’s. Solomon said, “We will solve this by cutting the baby in half so you both can have a part. Bring a sword.” Of course, the real mother instantly cried, “No! Don’t kill the baby! Let her have him!” Solomon quickly delivered the baby into the real mother’s arms (I Kings 3).
As business leaders, we need to discern right from wrong as well. Our goal is to have a very profitable and successful company, but at the same time, we must uphold ethical principles and social responsibility. Through our knowledge and ability to discern, we will make the right business decisions and analyze them properly so we can be competitive while still following God’s desires for our organization.
Our daily lives should be the same. We must be wise to know what God’s strategy is for us, but we also need to discern right from wrong. Just because something may appear to be right, does not necessarily mean it is right. Sometimes something might be right, but it is not God’s desire. Therefore, we must seek God’s wisdom and ask him to help us discern what we need to do on a daily basis so we can execute the strategy that God has for our lives.
