Proverbs 1 speaks of wisdom in terms of recognizing danger and fleeing from it. It encourages you to refuse the enticing words of tempters (Proverbs 1:10-19), while heeding the voice of wisdom, which invites you to a better way (Proverbs 1:20-33). Throughout the Proverbs, there is a continual call to be one who hears, one who listens, one who willingly acknowledges his or her own simplicity (and therefore need for instruction). Teachable humility is absolutely necessary if you desire to be wise. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7).
Jesus, of course, is our perfect earthly example of wisdom. Not only did He live wisely—in fact “filled with wisdom (Luke 2:40)—He is wisdom itself! Since Jesus is the wisdom of God, we can only be wise to the extent that we follow Jesus.
As we learn about the pursuit of godliness this week, we are really talking about how to follow in the footsteps of Jesus along the path of wisdom. Regardless of whatever temptations may come your way, wisdom will always offer an alternative route, one whose path has been worn down for you by your Savior. He grants wisdom to those who lack it (James 1:5-6) and strength to the weak.
How does Jesus set an example for the life of godliness? What are some ways in which following His example sets you on the path of wisdom?
