Genesis 11:27-12:9; Genesis 15, 17, 22; Joshua 24:1-3; Romans 4; Galatians 3

Moses wrote of Abraham’s life to show the Israelites their true heritage as Abraham’s children. As you might expect, while the Israelites wandered in the wilderness, they would have wondered who they were and why they were traveling to this far-away land called Canaan. The life of Abraham answers those questions and more.

As this week’s study unfolds, we will discover how and why God chose Abraham as the father of His people. We shall also see how God’s promises to Abraham in Genesis 12, 15, and 17, extend to a new nation, Israel, and beyond—to all peoples and all nations. We shall also see how Abraham matured in his faith in God.

Read the assigned texts and answer the following questions:

  • What (if anything) did Abraham do that God would choose him to become the father of His people?
  • How did Abraham respond when God called him?
  • What did God promise Abraham and how did it extend to the nations and you?
  • What does Genesis 22 indicate about Abraham’s faith?
