In this passage, the Apostle Paul prays for the people of Colossae. His prayer is short (v.9), but the ramifications continue on into the following verses. His points build a solid foundation for the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom that move from the internal realm of thinking into every part of life. As believers, we, too, are included in this great prayer.
Paul prays (v.9) that we “may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” He does not start with action, but with good thinking. Take a moment to pray for yourself and your classmates for this kind of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
Verse 10 has the words “so as to walk,” which is to show the results of the prayer in verse 9. The result of a foundation of knowledge and wisdom is a Christian walk worthy of our calling as God’s children. In this walk, we will be pleasing to Him and bear good fruit through the works we do in His name. In fact, our walk will increase our knowledge of God! Take a moment to pray that the results of your education will show up in your life.
Inevitably the Christian seeking to walk a worthy life will encounter difficulties. Verse 11 notes the source of strength as God Himself, and Paul encourages us to persevere and endure “with joy.” Take a moment to pray that even in trials you will see God’s hand, be strengthened and be joyful.
Finally, Paul shows the importance of thankfulness in verse 12. Believers who base their lives on good thinking and persevere through difficulty will have a thankful heart. Take a moment to be thankful for what God has done, and will do, in your mind, heart, and life.
Take this short passage to heart throughout this course. Take some time right now to pray through each phrase (as suggested), asking the Holy Spirit to teach you as you study, as you interact with His Word, and participate with your fellow students.
