Proverbs 13:18

According to Warren Buffett (2017), “Many companies, of course, will fall behind, and some will fail. Winnowing of that sort is a product of market dynamism. Moreover, the years ahead will occasionally deliver major market declines – even panics – that will affect virtually all stocks. No one can tell you when these traumas will occur – not me, not Charlie, not economists, not the media.”

The Christian life is a life of discipline. The Bible teaches us that we are not to be tossed around by every teaching. Our investment in the stock market needs to be a disciplined approach to investing so that we are not given to every teaching, or stock report, coming out. Buffett communicates the same thing in the letter to the Berkshire Hathaway stockholders.

How can we understand the stock market behaviour from a Biblical perspective? Here are several ways:

  1. We must integrate God into our investment decisions. We must recognize God as the Owner and Lord of every financial blessing in our lives. It is not ours; it is His.
  2. Remember that wealth is an extension of our partnership with God. He allows us to manage His resources, just like the wealthy man in Matthew 25 did with his servants.
  3. As we follow His principles in making investment decisions, we will be inspired as we seek to do everything to the glory of God.

When we follow these three Biblical perspectives, we can rest assured that we follow a disciplined Biblical perspective in investing.

Consider the following as you respond to this devotion:

  1. Does the stock market behaviour give you cause to be concerned? Why or why not?
  2. Who do you turn to for advice related to investing in the stock market? Do you think Warren Buffett is a reliable source for advice? Why or why not?
