Let us begin our devotionals by appreciating God’s design in creating us as human beings. Regardless of whether we are male or female, single, married, divorced, a single parent—whatever our state or role, we were loved and desired by Almighty God long before we came to be. We cannot think about marriage and parental roles without a bedrock certainty that we are valuable as is. Because we know that, we will come “whole” to marriage rather than desperately seeking someone or something to fill up our “holes.”
Psalm 139 says God created us and saw us there in our mother’s womb. Every birth is a heralding that God loves us and wants us. He has breathed life into us and every beat of our heart is an affirmation and celebration of how much the God of the universe is personally taking care of us.
He knows the day we will die as it says in verse 16. Psalm 90 says the same: “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” What does that say about God’s detailed love for us?
As a man or a woman, we will fail. When we do, we must run to Jesus, lay ourselves at His feet, confess, repent, and ask Him to help us and change us. Then we are to get up and walk in His forgiveness, knowing He is for us and every challenge in life can be met through Him.
Consider the following:
- Ponder the verses in Psalm 139 and how they apply to you.
- Comment on how we must value ourselves as God does before all roles or “labels.”
- Whether a man or woman, evaluate yourself honestly: are you laying yourself before God, on a daily basis, in complete surrender to the Lordship of Christ in every area of your life?
