Proverbs 23:7 , Philippians 4:8

There’s an old story about a young man who sits at the city gates with a wise elder of his community.  A traveler comes to the gates and asks the old man, “So what is this city like?”   The old man answers with a question of his own.  “Well, what was the city like that you came from.”

At that, the traveler begins to tell the old man that he disliked the city he came from and found the people there very dissatisfying.  The old man then said, “Well, friend, this city will be the same.”

A few hours later another traveler appeared at the gates and asked the old man the same question.  “What is this city like?”  The old man answered the traveler’s question with the same question he asked the first traveler.  “Well, what was the city like that you came from?”

At that, the second traveler began telling the old man how much he loved his city and how much he enjoyed its people.  The old man said, “Well, friend, this city will be the same.”

The young man who was sitting with the elder of the city asked him how he could answer the two travelers as he did, and the old man said, “Our city will be to each of them whatever they make it to be.”

How will you choose to think during your time here at this institution?

Do you believe you have the power to make your experience positive and rewarding, or do you feel that most of that will come from others?
