2 Timothy 4:1-4

In his final epistle to his most trusted partner, Paul gives a final charge to Timothy.  As a minister, it is vital that Timothy be the right kind of person and do the right kind of work.

In 2 Timothy 4:1-4, we find a call to action regarding preaching.  Timothy does not seem to have the bold courage of Paul, and he is under pressure from false teachers who oppose him, disciples who need his instruction, and unbelievers who are reluctant to hear him.

As we begin our journey to grow as  faithful expositors of God’s Word, we must first understand the nature of our task as preachers.  A proper view of our calling,  our audience, and our personal disposition as preachers is essential.  The charge Paul gave Timothy is still relevant to us today.

Consider the questions below as you respond to the above devotional:

  • According to this passage, to whom will the preacher answer for his efforts in proclaiming the Word of God?
  • What sort of reactions may a preacher expect from those who hear him?
  • Whatever the reactions may be from his hearers, what sort of personal attitudes and habits must a preacher maintain as he pursues the work of preaching?  List as many features as you can find in this passage.
