It is easy to get so caught up with living in this world that we begin to start thinking like the world thinks. Peter warns us to maintain a pure mind based on the word of God. One method suggested to accomplish this is “by way of remembrance”.
Part of that remembrance is realizing that God used a natural event, the flood, to change the conditions of life on earth. It was not just a local flood, but a worldwide one. Genesis 7:11-12 describes three major causes of the flood: fountains of the great deep, windows of heaven, and rain (which humans had never seen before). Each of these events can be compared to geological conditions that can be observed today, though not on the same scale mentioned in the scripture. If we look only at the how these natural phenomena operate today, we will miss how God used them in a spectacular way in the past. Also, it is important to note that God promised in Genesis that He would never flood the earth again as He did in the time of Noah (Gen 8:21-22).
Think of one or two other events from the scripture where God used geological or natural conditions to aid, judge, or influence people about Him. Tell of a time that you experienced a natural event in your life that influenced your relationship or thinking about God? How did that change your perspective on giving thanks and praise to God?
