Issues regarding the creation of wealth surround us as business professionals. Uses of wealth can be life-giving or self-serving. As Christian business professionals, we must align our view of the source and purpose of wealth with God’s view.
In Deuteronomy 8:18, God is reminding the Israelites that apart from Him, they cannot create wealth. His ability to generate wealth represented his love and commitment to them. Apart from Him, we cannot generate wealth. Scripture tells us the purpose of wealth. It is to show God’s love to us and that he is our provision. He is the source of our abilities and should be included in the purpose of our work.
Society might say that the generation of wealth comes from wise management practices, taking advantage of opportunities, or getting a lucky break. To generate wealth apart from God’s purposes is self-serving. As we wrestle to bring together the conflicting view of the source of wealth that society has with God’s Word, we must be prepared to lead in this area.
Wealth comes from our labor and God’s power. The impact of wealth in our personal lives and others should align with God’s purposes. The difference between life-giving and self-serving actions involved in wealth creation and the utility of wealth are a prime opportunity for the testimony of Christ to be on display.
As we proceed with the material for this workshop, let’s be reminded of the great responsibility we have to be examples and point those around us to Christ.
