This portion of the Bible is foundational. It describes an historical event–CREATION! It is the TRUTH about how the world began. The “beginning” began with God. God is eternal, so He was there before all that we see around us ever existed! This universe in which we live was His idea. It was created by Him. He spoke, and there was day and night and seas and animals, and, ultimately, human beings. Human beings were created on the sixth day. Man and woman, Adam and Eve, were created by the hand of God—Adam from dust and Eve from Adam’s rib, yes, literally! These first two human beings were unique among God’s creation. They are not animals. In fact, they were created in God’s image. They were not “gods,” but they did reflect characteristics of their Creator–God Himself. We are given more specifics of the creation of Adam and Eve in Chapter 2. Of course, by the time we read through Chapter 3, we see those created in His image, those at the pinnacle of His creation, disobeyed Him—and sin and death entered into this world. The world has never been the same!
There are so many facts presented here, in this portion of Scripture, which lay the foundation for our understanding of the world. We see here, in God’s Word, that everything as we know it, began with God. The reality is one cannot understand this world without a proper understanding of the truths in these first three chapters of the Bible. We see the reality of God. We see that He existed outside of time and space. We see that He was, and is, eternal. We see His handiwork in creating stars and galaxies. We see His amazing power in His creating animal life. We see Him actually take the unprecedented step of breathing life into Adam, as He created the first human being ever to walk, and talk, and breathe, and eat, and live on this planet. We also see the explanation as to how sin (and its far-reaching consequences, such as sickness and pain—and death) entered into our world with the choice of Adam and Eve to disobey God. This event is sometimes referred to as “The Fall”). Again, apart from an accurate understanding of these foundational events, one is unequipped to truly understand the reality around us. So, today, those who reject the truth of God’s Word begin with a disadvantage. They may desire to understand and explain significant questions such as, “How did we get here?” and “Why are we here?” However, apart from God’s Word, it is impossible to provide an accurate explanation of such issues as life and death, evil and pain, right and wrong, and truth and reality.
Consider the following questions as you post your reflections on this passage of Scripture (and its implications).
- How do some people attempt to explain how this universe and/or human life came into existence apart from God?
- What do you find most amazing about God’s creation? Why?
