John 14:1-6

At this point in the Gospel of John, Jesus is with the disciples in the Upper Room the night He will be arrested. He will soon be crucified. What we read in this passage of Scripture is some of Jesus’ final teaching of His earthly ministry. As you notice, He talks about the reality of the afterlife, of heaven, and of the hope for those who put their trust in Him. In verse 6, He makes it clear that He is the only way to heaven and the only way that individuals can have a relationship with God. Notice, that Jesus points out that He is “the way, the truth, and the life.”

This week, as we begin our study, it is important to note that what individuals believe about God, Jesus, and God’s Word matters. Ideas matter. Though there are many different ideas in the world in which we live and there are many different worldviews, not all ideas, or worldviews for that matter, are equally valid. In fact, Jesus’ words in this passage speak to the reality of an afterlife, the reality of heaven, and the fact that salvation may only be found through faith in Jesus Christ.

So, consider the following questions as you post your reflections on this passage of Scripture (and its implications).

  • What is your response to Jesus’ teaching that He is the only way to God?
  • Have you had a personal experience in which you put your faith in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation? If so, when/how did that happen?
  • How does your perspective of Jesus impact your perspective of the world?
