Here we are at our last devotional of the course. It will feature how the Scripture might relate to ideas in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Albert Ellis and other cognitive behavioral therapists, believe firmly that our thoughts are what make us behave as we do. In other words, behavior results from our thoughts/beliefs; therefore, our cognitions must be changed. Scripture also alludes to this in Romans 12:2
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.
What, then, results from the renewing of one’s mind? Paul, in Philippians 4:8, again provides the answer:
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things
As you prepare to write this devotional, reflect on the influence that secular music, movies, television, etc. has on how we think.
Consider this:
- What kinds of messages do we get from the entertainment industry?
- How might we think about it?
- How does that in turn affect our behavior?
