If there ever was a mentor/mentee relationship in Scripture, it was that of Paul and Timothy. The above text is just a small portion of the evidence we see of this relationship. It is clear that Paul invested in Timothy, and that the investment paid off. It is interesting that likely Paul’s last written words were written to this young pastor.
Study this passage by thinking about the following questions:
- How does Paul address Timothy?
- What does Paul want for him?
- How does Paul remember Timothy?
- What do you suppose Timothy was tearful about?
- How do you suppose Paul was aware of the faith of Lois and Eunice?
- What was the gift that Paul wanted Timothy to fan into flame?
- Why do you think Paul mentions self-discipline to Timothy?
How does the study of Paul and Timothy’s relationship spark your interest in receiving mentoring? If you already have a mentoring relationship, how is yours similar to or different from Paul and Timothy’s?
