The first and most important question in the study of Christology is, “Who is Jesus Christ?” History records that a man named Jesus from the village of Nazareth lived during the first century. But who was He? Was He simply a man? Or was there more to Him? Many will argue, including Lyle Rollings, that he was the greatest man in history. Rollings wrote,
“Jesus; Had no servants, yet they called Him Master. Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher. Had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer. He had no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world. He did not live in a castle, yet they called Him Lord, He ruled no nations, yet they called Him King, He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him. He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.”
While this is a great description of Jesus, the best description is found in Scripture. Specifically, in Colossians 2:9 where it clearly states the deity of Jesus by proclaiming “in Him dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” There is no mistaking the fact that while Jesus was fully man, He was also fully God. He is omnipotent. He is omniscient. He is holy. The list could go on and on as He manifests the same attributes of goodness and greatness as God the Father. The Colossians text goes on to state that He is the head of all principality and power. In other words, He is co-equal with both the Father and the Holy Spirit in all ways.
- How would you argue that Jesus is the greatest man in history?
- How would you argue that Jesus is not only fully man, but is also fully God?
- What is your favorite attribute of Jesus’ deity? (They are the same attributes from Theology Proper, i.e., omnipotent, omniscience, eternal, holy, etc.).
