Proverbs 16:32 ; Matthew 7:12

Sportsmanship is more than just following the rules; it’s about doing what is right even when faced with challenges and competition. Proverbs 16:32 and Matthew 7:12 remind us of the value of sportsmanship which involves fairness, respect, self-control, patience, and thinking of others, both on and off the field. It involves incorporating spiritual principles into the practice of sportsmanship.

When we can control our passions, it is as if we have rule over a city. The city, in spiritual terms, is our heart. Christians must embody self-control in sports, treating opponents, teammates, coaches, and officials with the same respect and fairness they desire for themselves. This must be our goal, while still striving to win. True sportsmanship is rooted in love and compassion. An athlete who can do these things is a living example of God’s love.

In the arena of sports, we often witness intense moments where tempers flare, and sportsmanship is tested. As believers, we are called to exhibit self-control and patience, setting an example of grace and respect in all circumstances.

After careful consideration, please answer these questions.

  • How can we practice self-control and patience in our interactions, both on and off the field?
  • What does it mean to be a true sportsman or sportswoman in today’s competitive world?
  • How can we encourage athletes to prioritize sportsmanship over winning at any cost?
