Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Interestingly enough, these verses in Deuteronomy 6 are recited every Sabbath day in the synagogue. It has become the Jewish confession of faith. Today you will see Jewish people tie phylacteries to their foreheads and their left arms. They took God’s word very literally. At the time that Moses wrote this to the Israelites, they understood that the world around them had very different beliefs. They had times that they followed the Lord but they also allowed the world around them to influence their faith. Knowing and keeping God’s Word was of the upmost importance.

Notice in this passage that God holds parents responsible for teaching his Word to their children. Youth pastors/directors/workers are not mentioned in the passage. In many churches parents often pass off biblical teaching of their children/youth to leaders in the church. Why do you think this has happened? What was your experience in your home and church? What role do you think children and youth workers should play in the church?
