I John 4:1-3

In the Scripture reference, the Apostle writes to warn Christians against being gullible. i.e. they should not easily believe everything. Instead, they must always test what they hear being taught or what they read because many false prophets have gone out into the world. If they are not alert, they will be deceived. One of the roles of Apologetics is to help us tell the difference between truth and error, right and wrong, or tell when truth is mixed with error. 1 John 4:1-3 and other related parts of God’s word are intended to sharpen our discernment abilities.

This week, we aim at knowing what discernment is all about and why it is a necessary aspect in the life of the believer and of the church. Our intention is to be like the Bereans who, after Paul had taught, would spend time searching the Scriptures to see for themselves whether the teachings of Paul were consistent with what the Bible teaches (Acts 17:11). The Bible is full of such exhortations for Christians to exercise discernment.

Answer the following questions:

  • What should Christians learn about Biblical warnings against false prophets?
  • Name at least two persons you know who are false prophets and state why you would give them that label.
  • List at least seven (7) other passages of Scripture that warn us about false prophets or false doctrines.
