We have begun the hard work of sermon preparation. You have called on your skills in hermeneutics and applied them to a passage of Scripture to draw out the idea found in the text.
As we continue the work, you will add skills from the discipline of homiletics to decide how best to preach what you find in Scripture to the people who need to understand it. The complexity of all the different skills required to craft a faithful, understandable, and memorable sermon may seem daunting. We can take heart that we are not the first to preach, and part of the preacher’s calling has always been to constantly improve both as a person and preacher.
Consider the following as you reflect on this week’s devotional:
- How does Paul’s encouragement to Timothy apply to you in the midst of this course? It is early in our journey, but can you identify something you have learned, or improved, or corrected in your understanding of preaching already?
- How might this passage help you preach effectively for the rest of your ministry?
