Read Isaiah 49:1-13W

The Servant, as described in Isaiah 49, will guide exiled Israel home. The interplay between the “ideal Israel” and the “nation Israel” in Isaiah 49:1-13 should leave the interpreter probing the text for what is going on in this particular context.

The prophets of Israel often played the role of a marriage counselor, standing between a covenant-unfaithful Israel and Yahweh, the covenant-keeping God of Israel. How to read and interpret the prophets is an important task for the Christian, especially given the sheer size of some of the prophetic books in the Old Testament.

How should the Christian understand/apply Israel’s prophetic literature, given that Jesus has come and inagurated the new covenant?
