Joshua 1

Part of good coaching is the transference of timely, healthy life principles, passed on from one wise coach to another.  In the passage above, we see Moses’ coaching fingerprints on Joshua, who is getting ready to lead Israel forth into the Promised Land.  Notice what he did:

  • He instructed the Israelites to get ready for movement in 3 days.
  • He gave specific directions to the Reubenites, Gadites, and half tribe of Manasseh, regarding the placement of their wives and children, their fighting men, and the support roles these tribes would play.
  • Notice their response to Joshua: “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.  Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses.”

Again, part of good coaching is helping people think about a preferred destination; the optimal place for them to go, according to their own goals.  Strategic questions help people think about these things.

Had you been in Joshua’s position, what kinds of questions would you have asked of the Israelites to get them to think about their preferred destination (the Promised Land) and how they were going to get there.
