Exodus 15:1-18

This chapter is a song of Moses that recalls the mighty acts of God when He led His people out of Egypt.  Read this song and reflect on how Moses describes God.  For example, there are a number of descriptions of the Lord as a powerful warrior who triumphs over the power of Pharaoh and His army (verses 2, 3, 8, 11, etc.).  What makes the God of the Bible different from the gods of Egypt is that He acts powerfully in History.  Notice how many things God does in these verses:  He casts the army of Egypt into the sea (4), He shatters the enemy (6), He overthrows the adversaries (7).

All of this activity of God is based on His steadfast love for His people (verse 13).  He loved Israel and led them out of their slavery.  The Old Testament regularly describes the events of the Exodus as “redemption,” a word which is used frequently in the New Testament for our salvation from sin.

How is this power of God reflected in the New Testament?  How has God redeemed the Christian out of slavery of sin? Read Phil 2:5-11 and reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus as a “mighty act of God’s power.”   Notice especially the triumph of Jesus over all of creation, above, on, and under the earth.
