For those who have answered God’s call to minister in a cross-cultural setting, it undoubtedly didn’t take them long to realize that they weren’t in Kansas anymore! (The Wizard of Oz, 1939). To be successful in any cross-cultural ministry setting, particularly when planting a new Church, one must adapt to the host culture. However, at the same time, we must never sacrifice sound Biblical teaching in order to accommodate the cultural understanding of the audience.
In the passages this week, we see a beautiful example of how Paul adjusted his messages to appeal to the people to whom he was speaking. When doing cross-cultural ministry, you will be working with others. You must not only be able to get along with your teammates, but also work with the local population to achieve the goals which God has planted in your heart. Everyone must work toward the common goal of bringing the word of God to as many people as possible. .
Consider the following questions:
- Who was the primary audience present at Paul’s sermon in Antioch of Pisidia?
- In what ways did Paul adapt and tailor his sermon to his audience so that they would understand the message more effectively?
