Philippians 2 implores us to consider others better than ourselves and to look out for the interests of others, considering them as even more important than ourselves. This is a real challenge for all of us; only by cooperating with God can our minds be transformed, so we are capable of others-minded thinking, transcending self-centeredness.
As human resources leaders, in order to effectively influence and motivate those with whom we work, others-mindedness and objectivity are required. We are to humbly “regard others as better than ourselves” and intentionally look for ways to encourage, engage, and help others. Imagine how a human resources department might influence the employees of an organization if this was their collective approach to all employee issues, problems, and opportunities.
Answer these questions:
- What might happen if this was the approach to employee evaluations, training and development, and decisions involving compensation and benefits?
- How do you work to treat others better than yourselves?
- How have you seen employers do this well, or alternatively not do this effectively?
