Romans 12:17

As Christians, we are required to treat each other with love and kindness and to do what is right, without regard to how we’ve been treated.  This includes being honest and upfront in our business dealings.

Jesus offered the greatest gift: the gift of salvation.  And yet, he painted a realistic picture of what it would mean to follow him.

“Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues” (Matthew 10:17).  “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me” (Matthew 24:9).

He also let them know they would face loneliness: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20).

Sometimes in business, doing the right thing costs you. You may not get a sale when you are honest about the shortcomings of your product; or the competition may exaggerate about their level of service and undercut you.  You may lose a job or a business partner because you are not willing to “fudge the numbers” when filing taxes or other forms.   Even so, Jesus calls us to do what is right.

In our dealings with others, we need to be open, honest, and realistic.  When Paul tells us to do what is right, he means in every area of our lives, be they personal or business.

What areas might you need to examine to ensure you are being open and honest with yourself and others?
