Rather than view the historical books simply as “history”—a formal writing of what happened at a certain time in a certain place, what if we were to view these books as discussing God’s role in the lives of the people in the story? The following breakdown of the first 10 chapters of Joshua is a great example of what God did for Israel through Joshua.

  • God instructs the Israelites to enter the land—1:1-9
  • God has gone before them to terrify the occupants of the land—2:9-11
  • God brings them across the Jordan—Chapters 3-4
  • Circumcision required for rededication—5:1-12
  • The commander of the Lord’s army—5:13-15
  • God-given strategies—6:2-5; 8:2
  • God-given victories—6:16; 8:7; 10:42
  • Defeat when God’s instructions had been violated—7:5-12

After you read through those chapters, consider the following questions.

  • Take a moment and review this last year and ask yourself “How was God working in my story?” Prepare to share some ways.
  • How can you be more intentional today (and tomorrow) to see the hand of God working in your story?
