Psalm 139 ; 2 Timothy 3:16

Read through this Psalm in three different versions out loud.  Contemplate these questions.

  • Who is the Psalmist talking to?
  • What is the author saying about himself? God?
  • When did the author say God knew him?
  • Where can the author run to hide from God?
  • Why does the psalmist end the way he does?

This psalm was written as a progression of four distinct thoughts.  Each thought is grouped in six verses.  The progression of the psalmist’s thoughts is A) God, You knew me (1-6); B) I cannot hide from You, God (7-12); C) I am valued by You, God (13-16); D) I am passionate for You, God (19-24).

Consider the reason for the progression of this psalm and the implications for us. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). God has given us His truths throughout the entire Bible, and there is nothing that separates us from His love.

As you consider this week’s devotion, please answer the following questions.

  • What should we learn from this psalm?
  • How can we relate this to our own life?
