The Bible indicates that the life of a Christian leader should be a model for those who follow them. As Paul says, “Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you.”
There is a way of living that is first noticeable, and second, reproducible. The ethos of an organization is the result of its pattern of leadership. But more importantly, it is a pattern for life.
What kind of pattern are we giving the members of our organizations? In our workplace, our families, and our churches, what are we communicating with our life? We can become so results oriented, so production oriented, that we forget we are in the business of developing people. Unlike the warrior chief who led his band into battle, most of our training is given before the battle, in the quiet times of reflection and discussion.
Reflect on the training you have received concerning what it means to be ethical, and how to apply that to situations. Look long and hard at your current place in life. Are you setting the pattern of a good ethos for others to follow?
