This week we look at what Comer calls “problems of the mind and body” (Chapters 8-10).
Various addictions such as eating disorders, alcohol, and drugs take their toll on one’s body. Paul writes,
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore, honor God with your body. I Corinthians 6:19-20.
Many passages address the issue of drunkenness: Romans 13:12-14, Galatians 5:19-21, and I Corinthians 5:11, to name a few. In addition, it is known that using harmful drugs regularly can affect one’s body and mind. Some verses warn us to keep our minds sharp: I Peter 5:8-9, Proverbs 4:23, and I Corinthians 9:25-27, for example.
However, addictions do not always involve food, drink, or drugs. They can also include being addicted to other people, an addiction to one’s work, or an addiction to things or money.
Reflect on how addictions of any kind can interfere with our relationships with others, God, and ourselves.
