2 Peter 1:16-21 and 2 Peter 3:1-18

The Apostle Peter, early on in his second inspired letter (epistle), speaks about the fact that Christianity is not some myth someone manufactured. In fact, he points out that he was an eyewitness of the “majesty” of Jesus Christ. He notes that he, himself, heard God’s voice from heaven proclaiming Jesus as His own Son. Peter also makes it clear that the source of the Scriptures as God Himself; though he is referring, here, specifically, to the Old Testament Scriptures, the principles apply to the New Testament Scriptures, as well. Yet, there are those who deny the veracity and reliability of God’s Word. Peter warned his readers of those who would deny the reality of Jesus’ second coming. In fact, they would intentionally “forget” the truth about creation and the world-wide flood. Peter reminded his readers of God’s mercy, God’s desire to see individuals saved (born again), and also that one day the world, as we know it, will be destroyed by fire. After that, God will create new heavens and a new earth.

Given the reality of Christianity, the reliability of the Scriptures, as well as the temporary nature of the world in which we live, those who are Christians should live differently than others. We should love God’s Word. We should read it and study it. We should know what we believe, but we should be very sure that what we believe is truly consistent with what God’s Word actually says. How can someone who claims to be a Christian say they believe the Bible if they’ve never even read through it, even just one time? Those of us who do know and believe the Bible should live out what we say we believe. We should live with a sense of urgency when it comes to sharing Christ with others. For, as Peter noted, it is God’s desire for individuals who are unsaved to be saved—to be born again. It is not always easy for one to turn from sin and to turn to Christ, but it is simple. As has been said many times, becoming a child of God – being saved – is as simple as ABC.

A – Admit you’re a sinner, that you’ve disobeyed God.

B – Believe Jesus, God’s Son, came and died on the cross to pay the price for your sin, that He was buried, that He rose again, and that He is in heaven and wants you to be there one day, too!

C – Call on the Lord to save you—confessing your faith in Jesus and trusting the Lord to forgive you for your sins because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross.

Consider the following questions as you post your reflections on this passage of Scripture (and its implications).

  • How do you know you can trust the Bible?
  • How does the promise of Jesus’ second coming impact your life now?
  • Why is it important to remember that the world we now see is only temporary?
