This passage talks about unity and diversity within the Body of Christ. Unfortunately, in today’s world, the word diversity has taken on some negative connotations that may cause us to limit our use of the word. However, the concept of diversity in a biblical sense has great meaning and implication. The fact that each of us is different and has different spiritual gifts, different personalities, and different abilities is not only something we cannot deny, it is with the full intention of God’s design.
What is also important for us to remember is that with the great diversity of people within the church, there is also to be great unity. That is, the people who come together with different spiritual gifts, personalities, and abilities are able to focus on the common mission of the church.
As you consider the work of the pastor and the many needs of ministry, read through this passage of Scripture and reflect on how you fit into the Body of Christ. As a spiritual leader who will give oversight to many of the things done within the church, how does this influence your approach to leadership? How does this affect your role in pastoral care?
The people who are (or will be) a part of your congregation are individuals who also live in multiple communities such as family, work, neighborhood, service organizations, school organizations, etc. How does this passage of Scripture set the Church apart and what responsibilities does the pastor assume because of the place that the Church has in the lives of believers?
