Paul’s letter to Timothy calls on the young pastor to exhibit a high level of comprehension and response. It is the holy Scriptures that have revealed the need of salvation. It is the holy Scriptures that have revealed God’s solution for man’s greatest need – Jesus Christ. It is also the holy Scriptures that have given the principles that a believer should follow for daily life. Verses 16 and 17 interrupt the flow of the previous verses. Verse 16 will provide the source of Scripture and verse 17 will remind the reader of the great value of the Scripture This provides a unique emphasis on the foundation of God’s plan.
Verse 16 introduces us to a most important point: do we have all of what God has intended for us to have as the holy Scriptures or do we have just some of the Word of God? It is important that as a student of theology you settle the issue of inspiration.
- When Paul says that all Scripture is “God-breathed” does he mean “all Scripture,” emphasizing the whole as well as stressing each part, or does he mean “every inspired Scripture,” which may bring the question that Paul might think that some Scripture might not be inspired?
- If you believe that some Scripture is not inspired, what criteria do you use to determine what is and what is not inspired?
- How are the four elements of Scripture given in verse 16 (doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness) profitable?
Verse 17 relates the effect the Scriptures will have on Timothy. They will provide him with the information and tools necessary to face every situation and challenge that life presents. In essence, the Bible equips the believer for service. The Scripture first makes Timothy “perfect.” It fits him for use. It puts him in fit shape. Second, the believer is “thoroughly furnished.” The Word of God furnishes and equips the Christian to live a life that is pleasing to God. As Timothy allows the Scripture to transform his life and equip him for service, he will be prepared to do any of the tasks that are encompassed in his ministry.
- In what ways has the Scripture fitted you for serving in ministry?
- What areas of ministry do you feel well equipped to serve in?
- What areas of ministry do you feel lacking in?
- What are some good works that that flow out of your equipping?
