Read Luke 4:1-15

We know that Jesus’ “Bible” was the Old Testament. When the devil approaches Jesus in Luke 4:9, the devil quotes Old Testament Scripture to Jesus in an attempt to get Jesus to apply an Old Testament text in the context of the Temple in Jerusalem.

We know that the process of biblical interpretation is not complete until proper application is made. Yet, we know there can be challenges and abuses. We know that the devil distorted the Scriptures by misinterpreting and misapplying.

What can we learn about the interpretive enterprise from this episode in Luke’s gospel (Luke 4:1-15)? Have you ever heard of a situation within a local church of bad interpretation and misapplication? How should we prepare ourselves as responsible interpreters not to make these kinds of mistakes with the people that God has entrusted to us?
