Read Genesis 11:1-9

Read How Artificial Super-Intelligence Is Today’s Tower of Babel

One of the earliest stories in the Bible is about the tower of Babel.  At this tower, the people attempted to reach the heavens and make a name for themselves.   Obviously, God had other plans as we see in the end of the story.

Making a tower to the heavens has similarities to what some have in mind for artificial intelligence (AI) (see the Hawkins quotes in the article).

In the linked article by Ng, it asks: “Can artificial intelligence, created by humans, be superior (to) human intelligence created by God, displaying man’s supremacy, glory, and independence in himself, apart from his Creator?” The author Joanna Ng is a founder of an AI startup. A former IBMer, she headed up research in IBM Canada and is an IBM Master Inventor; she has 44 patent grants, with 12 pending; and has published two computer science books and more than 20 papers.  She describes four ways she looks at AI from a biblical perspective.

The article closes with “setting an AI trajectory in alignment with God’s prescribed hierarchical order, with his heart to love and to serve under the lordship of God, gives us access to his divine wisdom for our AI work to bring wise solutions to solve critical problems that are also dear to God’s heart” (Ng, 2020).

Consider the following questions in preparation for sharing in the devotional.

  • Things God means for good are often used by man for evil (Gen. 50:20).    How could God use AI for good?   Give some practical examples.
  • How might men use AI for evil?

What are ways Christians need to approach AI, so it is used for good?
