In these verses, Jesus is asked a question by the Pharisees who were trying to find a legal reason to arrest Him for teaching false doctrine. Jesus, knowing their true motives, answered their question with truth that could not be misunderstood or challenged. They were stunned into silence with His answer.
Jesus asked for a coin to be brought to Him. He then asked whose picture was on the coin. Of course, it was Caesar’s. He then instructed the crowd to give unto Caesar that which belongs to him. He also instructed them to give unto God that which belongs to God. Jesus understood the structure of having, and needing, government in this world. It is correct to pay appropriate tax to provide for the financing of the government and needs of the community. Jesus also instructed them to give to God what He deserves. This is not just a financial commitment; we are to love and honor God above everything else. He is the Supreme Judge and is above all earthly powers.
As you carefully consider this topic, please answer the following questions.
- Explain the motivation behind the Pharisee’s question to Jesus.
- Why does God instruct believers to pay taxes that are due to the government?
- Explain why our gifts to God must come from the motivation of love rather than a motivation of a law.
