Matthew 6:19-24 Guidelines for the wealthy
Matthew 6:25-34 Guidelines for the poor
A cursory reading of the Bible gives people the impression that Jesus has grave concerns about the accumulation of wealth; however, a more thorough study of the Word makes it clear that Jesus is not as concerned about wealth as He is concerned about idolatry. Interestingly, most of Jesus’ teachings take us right back to the First Commandment.
Rich and poor alike—and those of us in between—struggle with finding the right attitude toward wealth and possessions.
- The rich, keeping God first; “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
- The poor, well, keeping God first; “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
So you see, at its most fundamental level, it’s not about the money at all. It’s about a right relationship with Him. If we get that right, everything else can be fixed. If we don’t get that right, it really doesn’t matter whether everything else gets fixed or not, does it?
