Acts 1:1-8

Even a casual reading of the New Testament is enough to draw the conclusion that Christ is the chief Cornerstone and Foundation of the Church (1 Corinthians 3:11; 1 Peter 2:4-8).  Christ is the One who builds the Church.  However, He chooses to use His people to do the work. While it is an amazing privilege, it is at the same time a great responsibility. It is of utmost importance to discern where God is calling the Church Planter to begin a new work. It is a supernatural work. This requires the believer to wait on the Lord to hear His plans and purposes. God requires patience and strength as we pray for God to reveal the next step for us. Waiting on the Lord requires a lot of prayer and study of His word because we are transformed by renewing our minds.

Sometimes the wait is for God to align other pieces of the plan. Sometimes the wait is for God to align the pieces of our own hearts. As much as we want to move forward NOW – sometimes we’re just not ready. We have more to learn, more to change, and more to grow (Shirey, K, 2019, Prayer and Possibilities, accessed May 9, 2022, <link> ).

The passage this week gives us a glimpse at how important it is to wait on God’s call for our lives. Once we are given the green light, we can move forward in confidence knowing that we are fitting into God’s plans for our lives.

Consider the following questions:

  • Briefly describe the events leading up to Jesus’ followers “being assembled together.”
  • Why did Jesus command them to “wait”?
  • What is the connection between Acts 1:8 and Acts 13:2?
