How do we explain something we don’t quite understand ourselves?  The Trinity is one of those very difficult Biblical principles that we know and we believe, but we don’t fully grasp, because we are human.  Some have tried to explain it by illustrations such as: a pie with three slices, a man (father, son and brother), and an egg (white, yellow and shell).  While these may help us conceive this idea, they all have faults and failures that might lead us down heretical paths.

So our goal today is not to fully understand the concept of the Trinity, but instead to further understand.  Maybe you are just beginning this journey, or maybe you have studied it for years.  Each of you still has room to grow and understand this complex idea of Father, Son and Spirit.

As you consider the Trinity, think of it as a relationship.  Not an ordinary relationship, but a perfect and eternal one.  God doesn’t do anything that’s not perfect, so of course His relationships inside the Trinity will be that way.

One way that we can better understand the Trinity is by looking at the Scriptures where they encounter one another.  For example, look at Matthew 26:36-46.  Often when we review this Scripture it is about prayer, laziness or even obedience.  But focus on this Scripture and ask some questions about the relationship between the Father and Son.  What does this passage tell us about Jesus and God the Father?  What does it tell us about their relationship with one another?

The final question to begin asking yourself is this:  How does the Trinity and its relationship affect me?  As people have changed or dropped the view of the Trinity, it has affected their own relationship with God.  It is not just a crucial Theological concept; it is also a crucial part of our relationship with God.
