Jesus’ earthly ministry was growing and people were coming from afar to hear his preaching and benefit from his healing touch.
If we work in human services, we will have an impact and there will always be a steady stream of people who can benefit from a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or other personal intervention. There may even be the offer for additional clients, extra shifts, and the temptation of overtime.
Yet, Jesus withdrew to “desolate places” and prayed. He took time alone and made sure that he was rebalancing and having time away from active ministry. Though God, Jesus was fully human and could only be in one place. By stepping away, there would inevitably have been some who were disappointed by his absence, whether they were there to hear him speak or to be healed. If Jesus can step away and withdraw to regain balance, then how much more should we do likewise, despite the frequent and varied demands on our time and energy?
