In chapters 1 and 2 of Genesis, the author, Moses, wrote down God’s story of creation. While leading the Israelites in the wilderness, Moses told the story of how God created the heavens and the earth. He did so because the children of Israel have come out from Egypt and have lost a true knowledge of God. He desires to free them so that he can form the Israelites into the His people. As such, they are in dire need of knowing who they are concerning God and his creation.
Our purpose this week is found in J. I. Packer’s advice regarding Bible study: “When we study the Bible, we should ask three questions:
- What does it say about God?
- What does it say about man?
- What does it say about the world in which we live?”
The Genesis account in chapters 1 and 2 addresses all three of these questions.
Read the assigned text and answer the following questions:
- In this lesson what does the biblical text tell us about God?
- In this lesson what does the biblical text tell us about man?
- In this lesson what does the biblical text tell us about our world?
- How does knowing these things about God, ourselves, and the world help us understand the remainder of the Bible, and how we are to live with one another before God?
