Read I Timothy 5:8

In the Scripture for this week, the body of Christ must provide for fellow believers; otherwise, the body of Christ would be no different from nonbelievers.  However, the text goes on to tell us that the individual would be worse than an unbeliever.  You may wonder how you as a member of the body of Christ can provide for a fellow believer.  A way could be walking hand in hand with a new member of the body of Christ so that he can gain a deeper understanding of God’s holy words.  It could be answering questions that a person may have concerning the Bible.  This walk with a new believer is called discipleship and it is a logical approach in ensuring that someone builds upon the foundation for a solid Christian journey.  This is analogous to building a home on a structurally firm foundation with a sound engineering design.  Such a home could withstand strong winds including hurricanes and floods.  On the other hand, the lack of discipleship for a new believer is analogous to building a home in the wetlands in which the foundation is constantly wet and lacks firmness.  Such a home would wash away during a violent flood.

In applying our weekly Scriptural text to our learning for the week on healthcare financing systems, we will learn that many people depend on a health insurance program to pay for their healthcare services.  For example, there are those who have an employer-sponsored health insurance plan; therefore, it is the employer who is providing for its own as discussed in the Scripture.  In another example, the government invests billions of dollars in healthcare services such as the Medicare and Medicaid programs.  Therefore, the elderly, persons with certain types of health conditions such as end-stage renal disease, and low income citizens are able to receive healthcare services that are paid in full or partially through the government-sponsored health insurance programs.  Similar to the Scriptural text, this is another example of taking care of your own.  In this case, it is the government taking care of its own citizens.

In reflecting on the Scripture for the week, it is amazing to consider the numerous opportunities we have to effectuate change that will positively impact the most vulnerable citizens in our communities. Moreover, this is an opportunity to address those with physical, mental, and emotional needs.  Lastly, we can disciple them as they strengthen their faith and walk with Jesus.  Such a presence in our community would demonstrate that we have not denied our faith as we bring glory to God.

As you approach the learning for the week, consider the following questions.

  • How can you bring God the glory through addressing the gaps in healthcare services for the vulnerable members of your community?
  • How can you advocate for those who lack access to quality, affordable healthcare services?
