II Timothy 1:13-14

It seems as if we are ministering in days where the landscape never stops shifting. The monumental strides our culture has taken toward accepting practices that are incompatible with Scripture seem to grow with each passing day. Add to this the many instances of “Christians” deconstructing and it seems as if all hope is lost. However, Paul writes to Timothy encouraging him to remain faithful even when it might seem hopeless.

Paul emphasizes the need for Timothy to hold on to the sound doctrine which he had given to him. Paul desired that Timothy would always remain committed to the clear teaching of the Scriptures. We, ourselves, deal with contemporary claims against the Scriptures and there is the temptation to abandon the truth. It is in these pressing and pressure-filled times that Paul’s admonition seems most helpful. When we are tempted to abandon the truth that we have known. we must cling even more tightly to it than ever before

How can we do this? This can be accomplished by relying on the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. The success that we have in our ministries is directly tied to the effort we give to walking in the Spirit. Pressures abound and the culture seems to close in around us, but we must walk in the Spirit. Persecution may come, but we must walk in the Spirit. It is with the Spirit’s help we can recall those words that have been entrusted to us and continue to press on towards the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Consider the devotion above and post your response to the questions below.

  • How are you tempted to abandon the Words of Scripture?
  • What are the practical, day-to-day benefits of walking in the Spirit?
