Genesis 23-50; Genesis 11; Romans 8:28-29

God’s promise to Abraham did not stop with him, alone. It extended to Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob’s twelve sons. It also extended to the Israelites in Egypt and the wilderness. These chapters show how the Israelites developed into God’s people, and how they served as a template for the future people of God. God used the lineage of the Israelites to bring forth the Messiah, who is Jesus, the Christ.

This last study of Genesis details the progress of the development of God’s people from a small, embryonic group to a veritable nation. In short, it takes the reader from Abraham to Isaac, to Jacob, and then to Egypt through Jacob’s twelve sons.

Read the assigned texts and answer the following questions:

  • How does God take men with weak faith and sinful character and form them into faithful men of God?
  • What does God’s wisdom and providence in developing Israel as a people for himself indicate about His character and purpose?
  • How does this point to man’s need for a Redeemer?
