The book of Acts records the fascinating story of the growth of the early church from a small fledgling movement in Jerusalem to a faith that had permeated the Roman world. No matter what stood against the church, the faith continued to advance throughout the Roman world as Christians relied upon the power of the Holy Spirit and faithfully proclaimed the gospel message wherever they went. Because of the rapid growth of the church, it is easy for us to overlook the sacrifices that were made and the hardships that the early church endured. The accounts recorded in Acts remind us that at nearly every turn, Christians faced intense opposition. Rather than withdrawing from conflict—a decision that many of us would be inclined to make—we find leaders of the church courageously defend the truth of the gospel and their hope in Jesus Christ.
One clear and memorable example of this type of courage is recorded in Acts 5:17-42. In these verses we read that the religious authorities in Jerusalem, a body that included the high priest and several members of the Sadducees, enacted harsh measures to thwart the advancement of the gospel. Some of the apostles were imprisoned and publicly beaten for preaching in the name of Christ. Despite this opposition, the apostles and other leaders of the church continued to actively teach Christ and proclaim the good news of the gospel (Acts 5:42). As we study church history, we find that the courage and resolve that were on display in this passage continued to characterize the church of subsequent generations. Throughout the early centuries of the Christian era, we find that neither opposition to the gospel nor the courage of God’s people diminished. Many examples of individuals patiently proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ while experiencing severe opposition may be observed in early Christian literature.
Upon reflection, please consider the following:
- As you think about your own life, relate the times that you had to exercise courage to stand up for your faith.
- Describe a time where you shared your faith with someone who was opposed to the Christian message.
- What are some groups of Christians today who are experiencing persecution simply for their faithfulness to Christ?
