Genesis 4-11

The transition from Genesis, chapters 2 to 4, shocks the careful reader. God created man in perfect righteousness in Genesis 2, but before we are very far into Genesis 4, we see that Adam and Eve have fallen into sin, and one of their sons has murdered his brother! Moses records these events so that the reader might understand the seriousness of sin and its implications.

This week’s study focuses on the depravity of sin. Furthermore, it shows that man, left to himself, only becomes worse—not better. Thus, it shows man’s history just after the Fall to the tower of Babel.

Read the assigned text and answer the following questions:

  • Using three examples from the text, explain how the people sinned and how it affected, not just those around them, but the future of man, as well.
  • How did the people sin in building the tower of Babel and what is a modern-day parallel?
  • How does God respond to their sins and what does he do about them?
