Scripture is truly unique; there is no other literature like it. But there is this lingering hermeneutical question about who wrote the Bible – was it humans or God? In 2 Peter 1:16-21, Peter provides insight into the answer to this question. Please read this text and meditate on the dual authorship of Scripture.
This week in Advanced Hermeneutics, we will consider the philosophy of an “authorial-intent” approach to Scripture. This means that the responsible interpreter must learn how to articulate how God embedded Truth through the hands of over forty human authors.
Consider the following questions:
- What other Bible verses point to the dual authorship of Scripture?
- What, if anything, is lost in ignoring or denying the human element in the writing of the Bible?
- Why is it too simplistic to just say, “God wrote it”?
