Galatians 6:9; Philippians 1:6

He who began a good work in you

Never give up…. Practicing the piano can be quite difficult, even under the best of circumstances.  In college, I used to cry in the practice room during piano practice. (Sometimes I felt like my hands just quit working and would get quite frustrated).  As musicians, practicing our instrument is very important if we want to be successful.  God’s word encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, and this definitely applies to musicians as they are learning to master their instrument. In addition, perseverance is a needed trait we must develop in all areas of our lives. Learning and mastering the piano is a process that requires patience and persistence. There are moments when frustration and weariness may creep in, and it is in these moments that we must turn to God for inspiration and resilience.

When we face frustration of any kind, we must understand that in developing perseverance and resilience, we are adding to our faith. Faith that God will see us through difficult times; faith that trials will not overcome us in life. Each practice session is an opportunity for growth, much like the challenges we face in our daily lives. We need perseverance to navigate difficult passages, patience to work through complexities, and the determination to press on even when progress seems slow. In moments of doubt, we can’t forget that the discipline we develop in our piano practice mirrors the perseverance needed in our faith journey. We must learn to find joy in the journey, recognizing that each note played is a step forward in our musical and spiritual growth. May our practice sessions be times of worship, devotion, and reflection, connecting our hearts with God’s heart.

In times of weariness, the rhythm of our faith and the harmony of our dedication to the piano becomes a source of strength. As we persevere, we remember that God’s grace sustains us and the beauty of the music we create reflects His beauty and creativity. Jesus is our ultimate example of perseverance. We should have faithful fingers and faithful hearts.  Just as we reap a harvest in due time when we remain steadfast in doing good, may the melodies we create on the piano be a testament to the rewards of persistence.

After careful consideration, please answer the following questions.

  • How does faith in learning the piano develop perseverance?
  • How can we glorify God through our practice?
  • What are some life lessons you are learning, or have learned through practicing the piano?
