2 Thessalonians 3:7-9 , Philippians 4:9

Observational learning describes the process of learning through watching others, retaining the information, and then later replicating the behaviors that were observed. These scriptures are appropriate for understanding how observational learning works. For instance, Paul addresses the Thessalonians on how they (Paul and his brethren) behaved themselves as an example for others to observe, follow, and replicate. Furthermore, Paul charges the Philippians to do those things which they have heard, learned, and received from observing his life, and they would have the God of peace with them. According to these scriptures, Paul believed and preached observational learning. The old saying is: “I would rather see a sermon than hear one any day.”

  • Reflect on a time when you observed another Christian’s life and decided to retain and replicate the behaviors you observed. How did that experience work out for you?
  • Does your life represent a lifestyle that you would feel comfortable for others to observe, learn, and replicate?
