The Bible contains numerous examples of men and women of faith who exhibited great courage in times of significant opposition. One thinks of individuals such as King David and Esther. David famously stood up against a terrifying warrior, and, against all odds, achieved a great victory over Israel’s enemies. Esther risked her own life by approaching the king to make a bold request. In the New Testament we also find that the apostles constantly risked their lives to see the good news of Jesus proclaimed throughout the world. In Acts 5:17-42, Luke records the apostles courageously defending their proclamation of the gospel to the religious authorities of their day. Despite the great threats they received and even the punishment that they endured, they remained resilient in their faith and continued to proclaim the good news of Jesus.
However, acts of courage and faithfulness among God’s people were not limited to a few isolated incidents recorded in scripture. We might think of individuals such as John Wycliffe and Jon Huss who courageously proclaimed the truths of scripture, even when it threatened and displeased the authorities of their day. While the circumstances facing God’s people have changed significantly over the years, history is full of examples of men and women who have exhibited great courage and followed the example of the apostles. These are important truths to remember for Christians today, as persecution of the modern-day church is increasing all over the world.
Upon reflection, please answer the following questions.
- As you think about the account recorded in Acts 5:17-42, what are some of the lessons you believe we should learn about the testimony of the apostles?
- Are there principles from this passage that apply to modern believers?
