This verse can be described as the most controversial verse in all of Scripture. Why? Because it highlights the great exchange while at the same time highlighting the absurdity of it. We are told that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Christ died for us knowing that before our conversion, according to Paul, we would view God as our enemy. Paul highlights the controversy of this when he tells us in chapter 5 that humans would scarcely die for a righteous person, let alone an unrighteous one. So we are reminded that salvation is not something that we would naturally do for others, even those we consider good.
We must remind people of the greatness of our salvation that is purchased by Jesus Christ. Had it not been for Jesus Christ and his work on the cross we would not have a means to escape the just penalty for our sins. Praise God that he sent his only begotten son to make it possible for us to experience eternal life but even more so to correct our relationship with him.
- Reflecting on your own salvation, how are you still in awe of what Christ has done for you?
- How do we help our church members not lose the awe of their salvation and what Christ has done for them?
